HD64180 Replacement: Rabbit 2000/3000 Microprocessor

Rabbit Semiconductor is a fabless semiconductor company specializing in microprocessors and innovative development tools for the embedded controls industry. The Rabbit 3000 is a high-performance, 8-bit microprocessor distinguished by its C-friendly instruction set and fast number-crunching ability. Numerous on-chip peripherals and glueless interfacing to both memory and I/O reduces system component requirements and saves OEMs significant design time and production costs.

For embedded systems, the Rabbit 2000 and Rabbit 3000 outruns most 16-bit and even some 32-bit processors without losing the efficiency of an 8-bit architecture. In its first year on the market, an independent survey of OEM designers showed that more engineers were considering the Rabbit 2000 over such established chips as the Hitachi H8, Dallas 80xx/80Cxx, and Zilog Z8/80/180.

Rabbit 2000 designers have years of experience using Z180 and HD64180 microprocessors in embedded control products. While it runs three times faster, the Rabbit shares a similar architecture and a high degree of compatibility with the Z180 and HD64180, but with key improvements for superior performance and ease of use. Programmers familiar with the HD64180 or Z180 will be completely at ease with the Rabbit 2000 or Rabbit 3000.

The Rabbit 2000 and 3000 is ideal for systems requiring a low-cost microprocessor with extensive software capability. The Rabbit's fast, efficient, and C friendly instruction set includes numerous one-byte op codes for 16-bit logical and arithmetic operations and compact instructions for 16-bit indexed loads and stores. Software development is accomplished by connecting a simple interface cable from a PC serial port to the Rabbit-based target system.

The Rabbit 2000 and 3000 microprocessor speaks to the real needs of design engineers with 30 MHz clock speed, 4 serial ports, 40 parallel I/O lines, 7 timers, battery-backable real-time clock, and watchdog timer. Design advantages include:

  • Numerous on-chip peripherals and glueless interfacing to both memory and I/O, reducing system component requirements
  • Onboard slave port, enabling multi-processor designs
  • Multiple clock speed options through software, allowing dynamic trading of power versus speed
  • Highly optimized math libraries, yielding excellent math performance with 16 x 16 multiply in 12 clocks
  • Three levels of interrupt priority, allowing fast response to real-time events
  • Remote cold boot for downloading new programs over serial or parallel ports with no pre-existing program
  • Dynamic C development system unparalleled in the 8-bit arena, supplying TCP/IP software stack with source code
